Norfolk Public Schools, VA.
This instructional guide includes the curriculum for two complete and separate courses to be taught at the associate degree level. The first six units of the guide are the course content for a 2-3 semester hour course, "Transition from Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)." The entire content of the guide, 19 units in all, comprise the course content for a 15-17 semester hour course, "Alternative Intensive Education for Licensed Practical Nurses." Content of the courses was developed after review of the competencies taught in licensed Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs in the Tidewater region of Virginia. Each unit consists of a content/concept area, tasks/competencies, performance objective, enabling objectives, criterion-referenced measure, instructional activities, tools and materials lists, suggested audiovisuals, and selected references. Topics covered in the units include orientation to ADN education; communication; caring for clients; assisting clients to adapt and change; fluids, electrolytes, and acid-base balance; nursing interventions; role relationships/dysfunctional behavior; dysfunctions of the integumentary, sensory, gastrointestinal tract, endocrine, musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, hematopoietic, reproductive, and renal systems; and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. A matrix comparing competencies and materials used in developing the curriculum, such as articulation agreements, a public relations committee report, and a script for a nursing video, are included in the guide.
