Educational Guidance for Adults. Identifying Competences.
Oakeshott, Martin
A brief study conducted for the Further Education Unit, Great Britain, defined the competencies associated with educational guidance for adults. The objective was to develop a qualification for educational guidance workers with adults. The project provided an example of applying a competence model to a "higher level" interpersonal field of work. The Unit for the Development of Adult Continuing Education model of educational guidance corresponded broadly to the key factors outlined in the National Association of Educational Guidance Services (NAEGS) code of practice. A number of issues were raised related to the overall National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) system, use of functional analysis, and assessment. Recommendations for further action dealt with training, research, continuing work, close liaison, and completion of the present work. (Eight appendixes follow the 23-page report. Appendix I is a draft list of competence statements for educational guidance for adults. Three work roles are suggested: provide a service offering educational guidance to adults; deliver educational guidance to adults; and provide feedback on clients' requirements to agencies concerned with adults' learning. Units, elements, performance criteria, and notes for assessment are provided for the three work roles. Other appendixes are the competence writing model; NVQ levels; NAEGS code of practice; a policy paper on educational guidance for adults; discussion paper on guidance principles and purposes; and a 43-item reference list.)
