Archival Administration in the Electronic Information Age: An Advanced Institute for Government Archivists (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, June 3-15, 1990).

This is a report on the second and final phase of an institute which was designed to provide intensive instruction for the chief administrative officials of state archival agencies on the characteristics of and projected future changes in modern information systems, and to introduce them to management tools needed for operating in this new environment. Summaries of the following presentations and discussions are included: (1) a review of past and present goals and objectives (Edwin Bridges, Alabama State Archivist and chairman of the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA) Committee on Professional Development); (2) a discussion on the nature of information resources management (Sharon Caudle of the Syracuse University School of Information Studies); (3) a forum on state and federal information policies (chaired by Toni Carbo Bearman, University of Pittsburgh, School of Library and Information Science; (4) a review of state archives planning efforts (John E. Prescott, Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh); (5) a presentation on the methodologies and principles of systems design (Ken Sochats, Department of Information Science, University of Pittsburgh); (6) a forum on archival appraisal and electronic records; and (7) a discussion on future activities of state archivists and continuation of the Institute. Appendices include recommendations of the NAGARA Institute on electronic records; state archives statements about the Institute and future initiatives; a report produced by the state government issues working group; an outline of issues of national concern; and an evaluation of the Institute.
