Factors Salient to the Recruitment and Retention of Black Teachers in an Urban School District.

This dissertation examines factors associated with the successful recruitment and retention of black teachers. A literature review and a pilot study were used to identify 10 factors salient to teacher recruitment and retention. Those 10 factors were incorporated into a survey administered to 116 black first-year teachers and 116 white first-year teachers in a large urban Florida school district. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) recruitment and retention factors for black teachers do not appear to differ from those for white teachers; (2) the survey did not support the inhibiting influence of placing inexperienced teachers in either inappropriate or unattractive assignments; (3) the survey emphasized the importance of professional and social support groups; (4) many blacks and whites reported the perception that affirmative action goals were being used to screen applicants out of the interview process; and (5) the majority of blacks reported that they wanted to be identified by their professional credentials, and that affirmative action goals, desegregation orders, and quota systems might inhibit their ability to transfer, grow professionally, or become leaders in their schools. Statistical data are presented in 23 tables.
