Training Staff and Students in Safety Procedures and Practices for a Preschool Playground.
Jenkins, Marva Shelton
The director of a church-owned child care center implemented and evaluated a 10-week practicum intervention designed to decrease the number of playground accidents, maintain insurance coverage, and provide age-appropriate, safe playground equipment. Due to several accidents that had taken place on the center's playground in the past, the insurer requested that two pieces of equipment be either modified or removed. To meet objectives of the intervention, the playground's vertical climber was shortened from 7 to 5 feet; the depth of surface under swings was increased from 8 to 10 inches. All requirements of the insurance company were met. Teachers at the center were trained to effectively supervise the playground and help children respect and obey playground rules. The incidence of accidents was minimized. The project also demonstrated that the practicum's objectives could be met on a limited budget when team members worked cooperatively. Appendices provide a playground improvement rating scale, a center survey sheet, and a safety manual that includes a playground safety checklist and lists of playground safety habits. Twenty-eight references are included. (RH)
