Carl, Iris M.
Streamlined Seminar, v9 n4 p1-7 Mar 1991
The first of two documents presented, "Better Mathematics for K-8" (Iris M. Carl), describes the underlying assumptions, purpose, origin, formation, goals, and content of the "Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics" produced by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Information on implementing the Standards is given and four planning assumptions are identified. The second document, "SUM: Des Moines' Total Answer" (Kathleen Bullington), describes the origin, purpose, and nature of the Success Understanding Mathematics (SUM) program that uses manipulatives and a concrete-representational-abstract instructional sequence.
