Intended as a comprehensive collection of knowledge about managing college-level reading and study strategy programs for practitioners, administrators, and researchers, this book provides a review of the theoretical, empirical, and programmatic issues in the field. Chapter 1 ("Reading, Writing, and Academic Literacy" by Sharon L. Pugh and Faridah Pawan) reviews current thinking about the development of literacy at the college level. Chapter 2 ("Program Organization" by Kathy Carpenter and Linda L. Johnson) looks at the various organizational schemes of reading and study strategy programs at the college level. Chapter 3 ("Program Evaluation" by Hunter R. Boylan and others) explores the evaluation of such programs. Chapter 4 ("Reading Tests" by Rona F. Flippo and others) discusses issues and problems surrounding the assessment of reading at the college level and explores the various types of tests currently available. An appendix to chapter 4 summarizes the authors' evaluation of the tests reviewed. (SR)
