West Kootenay Educational Needs Study.
McLafferty, John; And Others
In an effort to develop an integrated understanding of the educational and training needs in the West Kootenay Region of British Columbia (Canada), a study was conducted by Selkirk College (SC) on the training needs of residents of the region. The study results were designed to supplement two previous studies conducted in 1989: an intensive study of the postsecondary educational needs of the East Kootenay Region conducted by East Kootenay Community College (EKCC), and a region-wide study of employer reported occupational skills requirements. Selected target groups for the study included secondary schools, college students, continuing education students, the general public, professional foresters, nursing/medical workers, special needs workers, and underrepresented groups (the disabled or handicapped). Surveys were sent to all groups, except the underrepresented individuals, who gave in-depth interviews. Usable responses were obtained from 3,292 individuals. Recommendations from the study are arranged by target group. Comprehensive recommendations for the region included the following: (1) EKCC and SC should coordinate class offerings when interests and enrollments do not justify course offerings in both Regions; (2) EKCC should conduct a study to explain the low interest in attending their school and identify actions to increase local participation; and (3) EKCC and SC should work with industry and government to foster greater interest in careers in the trades and engineering technologies/professions. Summaries of and recommendations from the previous two studies, and all three survey instruments used are included. (GFW)
