1990 Follow-up of Former JCCC Students Currently Enrolled at Four-Year Colleges or Universities: A Transfer Study.
Johnson County Community Coll., Overland Park, KS. Office of Institutional Research.
In 1990, a follow-up study was conducted of former Johnson County Community College (JCCC) students who transferred to four-year colleges and universities during 1989. The study sought to provide information concerning JCCC's role in preparing students for transfer, assess students' perceptions of their educational experiences at JCCC, and gather data on the transfer success of former JCCC students. Questionnaires were mailed to 1,277 JCCC students who had requested copies of their transcripts and verified that they had transferred or who had been identified as transfers by 11 senior institutions. Study findings, based on a 39.3% response rate, included the following: (1) JCCC was the first choice post-secondary institution for 66.1% of the respondents; (2) 92.2% of the respondents had achieved their educational objective at JCCC; (3) 51.2% completed less than 31 credit hours at JCCC, with the average number of credit earned being 33.8; (4) 21.3% earned an associate degree; (5) 80.4% of the respondents indicated that JCCC had definitely or probably helped improve the quality of their life; (6) 87% indicated that they would attend JCCC again, 92.8% would recommend JCCC to friends, and 73.1% would encourage their own children to attend JCCC; (7) approximately two-thirds indicated that their experiences at JCCC had helped to broaden their knowledge of the arts and sciences, expanded their tolerance for people and ideas, improved their oral communication skills, and enhanced their self-confidence; and (8) over 60% felt that their experiences at JCCC had helped them to improve their oral communication skills. The survey instrument is appended. (GFW)
