Developing Leadership Skills in High School Band Students.

The improvement of leadership skills in high school band students was the aim of the comprehensive program described in this report. The program contained three basic components: (1) administering the Keirsey Temperament Sorter; (2) a series of seminars; and (3) band laboratory activities. Following the administering of the Temperament Sorter, lessons were held with the participants focusing on topics such as motivating students, problem solving, communication skills, goal setting, leadership styles, and characteristics of effective leadership. Students were then given a laboratory opportunity to demonstrate effective leadership utilizing information covered during the seminars. Results of the program showed that the practicum had a powerful influence on the targeted students, with each item on the evaluation form rated as high. Results also showed that 100% of the target students improved their leadership qualities by at least one mean score.
