History is not merely events that occurred in the past. The past has influenced the present, as the present will influence the future. The purpose of this community study unit is to provide fourth grade students with an opportunity to investigate some of the history of Lee County, Florida. The unit's focus is on Thomas Edison, who built a home in Ft. Myers in 1886. The document includes an overview, objectives, information about Edison, a field trip checklist, and student activities. Appendices include the 4Mat model, an application of this unit to the 4Mat model, a resource guide, worksheets, a pre/posttest, a teacher's guide, games, an outline of the subject areas addressed in this unit, a discussion of scheduling considerations, and parent permission form.
