Peer Facilitator Programs: An Extension of Effective Guidance Services.
Poole, Ruth W.
This paper offers a synthesized review of the literature on student peer facilitator programs, in order to investigate and substantiate many of the ways in which peer facilitator programs extend and strengthen a guidance counselor's mission in the school. After an introductory discussion of the foundations and goals of successful peer facilitator programs, the literature review highlights various perspectives and effective practices pertaining to the selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of peer facilitators. The discussion provides evidence of the effectiveness of peer facilitators in extending the school counselor's mission, through a review of exemplary peer facilitator programs. The final section discusses the implications of these findings for school counselors who wish to implement a peer facilitator program. This discussion focuses upon the standards, structure, and guidelines that counselors need to institute for peer facilitators, and also the benefits of a successfully implemented peer program. (TE)
