Improving Student Performance through Parent Involvement.

A personalized parenting program was implemented to address poor academic performance and low self-esteem of high school students. Student records, the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, the Behavior Evaluation Scale, and teacher surveys were employed to identify and measure academic and/or self-perception growth. Parents participated in an 8-week course with an additional 10-week follow-up program. Students attended communication sessions during the follow-up portion of the program. The results were inconclusive due to the small sample size (six parents and five teenagers). Targeted objectives were attained by certain students and parents. It was concluded that personalized parenting courses could enhance students' academic performance and student/parent self-perceptions. Appended are screening instruments, survey results, sample communications and data collection forms, and a graphic analysis of teachers' perceptions regarding the students' behavioral performance.
