Personal Growth and Societal Expectations.
Leafgren, Fred; And Others
This document consists of part one of a book of readings that examine issues affecting men in the late 20th century. It was written for counselors at all educational levels, social workers, community therapists, private practitioners, clinicians, teachers, hospital workers, and Employee Assistance Program workers. Four chapters are included in this first section, which is on personal growth and societal expectations. "Men on a Journey" (Fred Leafgren) explores men in the context of their culture and identifies the positive impact counselors can make both on the lives of these men and on the culture. "Finding Ourselves: Self-Esteem, Self-Disclosure, and Self-Acceptance" (Ron May) explores how men's self-esteem is developed, methods of intervention, strategies for change for men who have low self-esteem, and an approach to developing an awareness of feelings. "Assessing Men's Gender Role Conflict" (James O'Neil) provides concepts to assess this conflict and a diagnostic schema to use in counseling, psychotherapy, and educational programming. "Career Themes in Counseling and Psychotherapy With Men" (Thomas Skovholt) identifies how the culture prepares men for the work world. Case studies are cited that illustrate career dilemmas that men face. (NB)
