Literacy in Developing Countries: An Analytical Bibliography.

This bibliographic review is a guide to publications on literacy in developing countries, which are available in English, French, Spanish, and German. Section I focuses on literacy and its relationship to orality. Section II addresses the interdependence of literacy and development. Definitions and conceptual approaches to literacy are discussed in Section III. Section IV groups theory and practice featuring learners, potential learners, and dropouts around the quantitative dimension and the qualitative dimension (selection, motives, learner characteristics, and dropouts). Section V discusses literacy learning, schooling, and alternatives. The focus of Section VI is on organization for literacy provision. Section VII analyzes and groups experience and insights gained through local, national, and global action, reflection, and transformation under the following sections: language issues, content of literacy programs, literacy methods, materials and media in literacy, training of literacy personnel, and evaluation. Challenges and issues are discussed in Section VIII. Each section, and each individual topic in Section VII, concludes with a list of references. A total of 923 references are provided.
