Strategy Games: Developing Positive Attitudes and Perseverance toward Problem Solving with Fourth Graders.

A fourth grade teacher and grade level team leader designed and implemented a 10-week practicum intervention meant to improve 26 fourth grade students' motivation, perseverance, and positive attitudes toward problem solving in mathematics. Students took part in activities that enhanced perceptual and deductive reasoning skills, including strategy games. Students were taught seven different problem solving techniques. Evaluation data indicated that there was positive transfer from instruction in strategy games to problem solving. Student attitudes improved, and perseverance and knowledge of problem solving techniques increased. Appendices provide a test of problem solving techniques, attitude inventory items, objectives or rules of games played, and tangram activities. (RH)
