Social Studies for Early Childhood and Elementary School Children Preparing for the 21st Century. A Report from NCSS Task Force on Early Childhood/Elementary Social Studies.

This position paper discusses: (1) the definition, rationale, and goals for social studies in the early childhood and elementary years; (2) developmental characteristics that should be considered in the planning of a social studies program; (3) basic research on elementary social studies; (4) the status of social studies in the elementary school; and (5) preservice and inservice education for teachers of early childhood and elementary social studies. The paper also addresses such topics as the nature of problems encountered by young children as they enter school and the length of time social studies should be taught daily in the elementary school. A total of 58 references are cited. (RH)
