This report presents suggestions for elementary school improvement from the 22 elementary school principals who comprise the charter membership of the National Association for Schools of Excellence (NASE). Each principal has received national recognition for educating low-income students, usually by emphasizing strong school-business cooperation. The following examples of successful schools are reported: (1) Jose C. Barbosa School (Manhattan, New York); (2) Franklin School (Newark, New Jersey); (3) General Daniel "Chappie" James School (Brooklyn, New York); (4) Thomas Jefferson Elementary School (Pasadena, California); (5) Lee Elementary School (Milwaukee, Wisconsin); (6) Solomon Lewenberg Middle School (Mattapan, Massachusetts); (7) Lincoln-McKinley Elementary School (Havre, Montana); (8) Paradise Elementary School (Las Vegas, Nevada); (9) Dr. Roland N. Patterson Intermediate School (Bronx, New York); (10) Charles Rice Elementary School (Dallas, Texas); and (11) Twentieth Street Elementary School (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). The following essential elements for achieving success are discussed: (1) high expectations; (2) clear vision; (3) strong leadership; (4) teamwork; (5) staff development; (6) strong, appropriate curriculum; (7) safe, clean, orderly environment for learning; (8) genuine accountability; (9) recognition and reward for excellence; and (10) strong community and parental support. The following material is appended: (1) answers to 14 questions about school success; (2) a timetable for implementing a school improvement plan; (3) a message from the president of the NASE; (4) the position statement of the NASE; and (5) a list of NASE charter members.
