Alternative Certification Program 1987-1988.
Goebel, Stephen D.; Sanchez, Kathryn S.
The Houston Independent School District (Texas) began its alternative certification program (ACP) in the summer of 1985. The original proposal provided for a 1-year internship training program. Combining on-the-job training with supplemental, district-developed training modules, interns who are successful in the program would be recommended to the state for certification. This evaluation examines the effectiveness of the district's training program by comparing the student achievement of ACP interns with the student achievement of inexperienced and experienced teachers who were trained in traditional teacher education programs. Results generally indicated that the students of ACP interns achieve as well as the students of teachers who are trained through conventional university teacher training programs. (JD)
