The Enhancement of Career Education/Exploration Opportunities in Conjunction with School Counselor, Paraprofessional, and Corporate Partnerships.
The practicum was designed to enhance career education/exploration opportunities in the junior high school. Services at the Career Center originally planned for the high school involved in this practicum were discountinued 2 years earlier due to a education/exploration termination of funds and failure to document program goals. The practicum's goals were: (1) to enhance career education/exploration in conjunction with counselor, paraprofessional and corporate sponsorship; (2) to increase the counseling staff's time spent on career guidance by 50 percent; and (3) to have students master stated competencies. Evaluation of these goals was achieved through the administration of pre/post-tests, time logs, and career units. An evaluation of the program indicated that the new career education/exploration program earned the complete acceptance and support of the students, parents, faculty, and business partners. Student satisfaction with the revamped program more than doubled. Private businesses for the first time became active participants in career education. Paraprofessionals were integrated successfully into the career education efforts. In addition, the time counselors spent on career education exceeded the practicum goal of a 50 percent increase, as measured by the time accountability logs. The concept that career guidance is solely the work of school counselors needs to be broadened to include support from faculty, parents, and various segments of the community. (Author/ABL)
