Preparing for and Financing Your College Education. A Guide for American Indian [and] Alaska Native Students.
ORBIS Associates, Washington, DC.
Lack of preparation and planning, lack of financial aid, and the complexities of the application process are the main reasons that American Indians and Alaska Natives do not enter or complete college. This guide provides information to assist Native American students in preparing for college and obtaining adequate financial assistance. Section 1 discusses issues in choosing a career, selecting high school courses, and choosing a college; outlines steps in getting organized for the college application process and preparing for college entrance examinations; and describes the Scholastic Aptitude Test, Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, American College Test, and Achievement Tests. Section 2 contains tips on seeking financial aid and describes scholarships, grants, loans, and work/study programs aimed at Indian students and administered by federal agencies, state agencies, colleges and universities, tribal agencies, and foundations with a serious commitment to supporting Indian students in higher education. Some financial support is intended for women or members of specific tribes. Appendices contain: a 4-year calendar of the application process; a list of tribally controlled community colleges and other educational institutions supporting Native American students; provide sample letters, forms, and checklists; and a list of guaranteed student loan programs and financial aid information sources for each state.
