Compton Community College District Student Demographic Data Longitudinal Study, Fall 1985--Fall 1987.

In 1988, demographic data were gathered on the students attending Compton Community College (CCC) between fall 1985 and spring 1987 to document the trends in student characteristics affecting the management and planning efforts of the institution. Information was obtained from the Data Processing Department regarding student sex, ethnic origin, age, day/night status, enrollment, marital status, residence, and units. Major findings of the study were as follows: (1) the majority of students attending CCC were Black, female, continuing education, single, and Compton district residents; (2) in fall 1987, 60.3% of the students were Black, 27.1% Hispanic, 10% Caucasian, and 2.8% Asian and Pacific Islander; (3) the percentage of day students increased from 64% in 1985 to 70.7% in 1987; (4) 24.1% of the students enrolled in fall 1985 were classified as first-time new students, compared to 38.6% in fall 1987; (5) for both fall and spring comparisons, there was a continuous decline in the percentage of Black students, while the percentage of Hispanic students steadily increased and the percentage of White students sharply increased; and (6) there was a marked increase from fall 1985 to fall 1987 in the number and percentage of students registering for 0 to 7.5 units.
