WorkWise. A Career Awareness Course for Teen Parents. Teacher's Manual and Student Workbook.
Intended for use with teen mothers, this yearlong career exploration curriculum is considered adaptable for use with any group of high school youth. The teacher's manual explains how to teach instructional units called Introduction, My Working Future, Sex Role Stereotyping, Careers, Who Am I?, Presenting Myself, Career Planning, Managing as a Working Parent, Taking Care of Myself and My Child, Finding a Job, Succeeding on the Job, and Wrap Up. Objectives, a yearly planner checklist, and pretest/posttest are provided. The materials for the units include time estimates, a rationale, objectives, information that can be used to teach the lesson, journal assignments, work sheets, homework assignments, recommendations for outside speakers, alternative ways for reaching objectives, ideas for handling sensitive issues, suggestions for additional resources, and links to previous lessons to which the teacher can make reference. The techniques used in the course are explained. An 18-page bibliography concludes the teacher's manual. Units in the student workbook contain exercises involving brainstorming, listing, discussion, problem solving, role playing, keeping journals, completing work sheets, and completing student monthly goal sheets.
