Breaking New Ground: Teaching Skills of Intelligence. Lethbridge Catholic Separate School District No. 9.
Lethbridge Catholic Separate School District #9 (Alberta).
The objectives of the 2-year Thinking Skills Project were to provide teachers and students with a set of thinking skills, to develop and validate a model of cognition for teachers, to devise a Measure of Questioning Skills, and to establish a normative base for this instrument. The model of essential thinking skills covers the basic processes: (1) qualification--finding unique characteristic units or basic identity (definitions, specific facts, problem/task recognition); (2) classification--determining common qualities (similarities and differences, correspondence, grouping and sorting, comparisons, either/or distinctions, typologies); (3) relationships--detecting regular operations (parts and wholes, numerical progressions, patterns, sequence and order, hierarchy, prioritization, logical deductions, generalizations); (4) transformations--relating known to unknown, creating new meanings; and (5) causation--establishing cause and effect, (interpretation, prediction, forecasting). Specific information on the development of the Measure of Questioning Skills is provided in seven appendices. Sample worksheets, recommendations for followup, and selected bibliographies are included. (JD)
