Junior High Social Studies: Teacher Resource Manual.
Durksen, Virginia, Ed.; McCord, Barb, Ed.
Responsible citizenship is the ultimate goal of social studies. Basic to this goal is the development of critical thinking. Social studies content is organized around knowledge, skill, and attitude objectives that should be pursued simultaneously. The objectives are discussed, a program rationale is presented, and the program content is summarized in the first section of this teacher's guide. Ideas for planning instruction and for evaluation are offered with models for illustration. The bulk of the document presents specific strategies and activities for teaching social studies in grades seven, eight, and nine. The broad topic for grade seven is people and their culture; for grade eight, it is history and geography in the Western hemisphere; and for grade nine, it is differing perspectives of economic growth. All of these strategies utilize the concepts, goals, and objectives discussed in the preliminary section. A list of learning resources approved by the Alberta (Canada) Department of Education, which might be used to facilitate teaching and learning of these subjects, is also included. (JB)
