This manual was developed to assist classroom teachers responsible for implementing the grades 8 and 9 integrated occupational social studies program in Alberta, Canada. It contains: (1) information about the goals and objectives of the curriculum; (2) thematic contexts for the delivery of prescribed knowledge, skills, and attitudes; (3) suggestions for planning and implementing the program, including instructional strategies, sequenced activities, correlations of learning resources with activities, and additional resource suggestions; (4) generic strategies designed to develop further facility in process, inquiry, communication, and participation skills; (5) suggestions for integrating social studies instruction with essential life skills and other subject areas; and (6) suggestions for using community resources in delivery of the social studies program. The themes covered in the grade 8 program are: (1) "You and Your Physical/Cultural Community," (2) "Comparative Study: Canada and Brazil," (3) "Canada: Colonization to Confederation," and (4) "Careerwatch 8." Those covered in grade 9 are: (1) "You and Your Social/Economic Community," (2) "Comparative Study: Canada, USA, and USSR," (3) "Citizenship in Canada," and (4) "Careerwatch 9." (JB)
