Head Start Success Stories.
Sorensen, Monica, Ed.
This publication presents a collection of true stories that demonstrate the ways in which children's and parents' lives have been enriched as a result of their involvement with Project Head Start. The stories describe remarkable achievements, often made in the face of great disadvantages and difficult circumstances, which illustrate, through real-life situations Head Start's benefits to children, families, and communities. The stories demonstrate that developmentally appropriate, comprehensive Head Start programs help families establish a place for themselves in the mainstream of American society. Other topics covered include: (1) benefits of Head Start for handicapped children; (2) educational and career opportunities Head Start offers to parents; (3) the way in which parents build self-confidence through participation in the program; and (4) ways in which the community benefits from the contributions to society made by Head Start participants and programs. It is maintained that Head Start's comprehensive child development program has laid the foundation for children's successful transition to elementary school and achievement through the educational process.
