The Impact of Undergraduate Enhancement Funding. Report and Recommendations of the Postsecondary Education Planning Commission. Report 7.
Florida State Postsecondary Education Planning Commission, Tallahassee.
The report analyzes the effect undergraduate enhancement funding in Florida has had on the student undergraduate experience. The study involved an analysis of data obtained from the Board of Regents Instructional Activity data files, analysis of the findings of previous studies and task force reports, the results of a survey distributed to 1,031 students at 8 institutions, and telephone interviews with 16 state university student advisors. Florida's initiatives to strengthen undergraduate education have involved reducing class size and improving the quality of advising services. Class size levels within the general education curriculum are still significantly above the 22:1 student-faculty ratio identified in the State University System Master Plan. Students surveyed rated their smaller classes more highly in overall quality, quality of instruction, chance to develop a personal relationship with the instructor, ability to concentrate on the subject matter, and other factors. Freshmen were generally satisfied with the advising services they had received, but as students progressed in their academic program, level of satisfaction declined. The majority of students were unaware of some advising services available to them. Several recommendations conclude the report. A copy of the student survey instrument and a bibliography of 28 items are included. (JDD)
