"Only" and Focus.
Vallduvi, Enric
The relationship of the word "only," one of a class of words known as scalar particles, focus adverbs, focus inducers, or focus-sensitive particles, with the "focus" of the sentence is examined. It is suggested, based on analysis of discourse structure, that this "association with focus" is not an inherent property of this scalar particle. The finding is shown to be in agreement with the approach that suggests that the exhaustive "feeling" is a pragmatic implicature, and supports the conclusion that "association with focus" is not part of the semantics of "only," but a pragmatically induced mirage.
