Guides in Gifted Education.
New Jersey State Dept. of Education, Trenton. Div. of General Academic Education.
The guides aim to help New Jersey school administrators and staff undertake the process of developing and implementing programs for their gifted students. The first guide deals with staff development, focusing on criteria to consider when selecting teachers of the gifted, teacher training, and stages of staff development. Appendices offer information on differentiated curriculum enrichment and a staff development program model. The second guide covers identification procedures, outlining myths in gifted identification, principles of identification, and three stages of identification (nomination, assessment, and evaluation). The third guide presents a proposed enrichment matrix. This guide discusses the qualifiers of an enriched curriculum, the differences between programs and provisions for gifted students, and suggestions on structuring and applying an enrichment matrix. The fourth guide focuses on the disadvantaged gifted, discussing identification through talent searches, the use of differential programming, and special services. It includes a listing of assessment instruments and recommendations for their use, and a matrix of promising identification practices. The final guide covers the arts, addressing identification criteria, development and implementation of differentiated programs, out-of-school activities, and program evaluation. Each section contains a reader feedback form and some have a bibliography. (JDD)
