Reflecting new understandings about language and literature, this curriculum guide is most influenced by the collective knowledge about the close association between language and learning, language and thinking, and language and personal growth. The guide recommends that students be encouraged at all times to use their personal, unstructured language to grapple with new ideas and come to terms with new experiences before they attempt to cope with the more structured means of expressing what they have learned. The guide also supports the principle of the integration of the language arts at all levels. The guide considers literature to be more important than ever before in elementary school: literature at other levels continues to be featured, but the emphasis is on experiencing a wider range of materials as opposed to analyzing a limited number of works. Sections of the curriculum guide include: (1) "Rationale"; (2) "Major Emphases"; (3) "Language Needs"; (4) "Learning Goals K-12"; (5) "Correlation of Student Objectives and Goals"; (6) "Language Development"; (7) "Integrating the Language Arts"; (8) "Balance"; (9) "Time Allotments"; (10) "Evaluation"; (11) "Meeting Individual and Group Needs"; (12) "Meeting Special Needs"; and (13) "Goals and Objectives."
