Social Dynamics of a University Weight Room: A Microethnography.
Ittenbach, Richard F.; Chissom, Brad S.
The purpose of this investigation was to describe and explain the social dynamics of America's second most popular recreational sport, weight lifting, as performed on a university campus. Data were collected and analyzed using the participant observation approach to grounded theory research. Several hypotheses evolved from this analysis: (1) it is possible to classify weight lifters according to a preestablished social hierarchy; (2) the reasons for lifting are as varied as the people themselves; and (3) a number of social roles exist to help guide the overt behavior of lifters.
