New Jersey State Dept. of Education, Trenton.
This publication focuses on the need for school environments conducive to teaching and learning, for parents who give positive support, and for students who are motivated to learn. The publication is based upon contemporary research into the relationship of students' interest in learning and achieving to their academic success. It presents ideas about the nature and source of motivation, how motivation is affected by growth and development, the conditions under which it flourishes, and the role of teachers and administrators in enhancing it. Following the first introductory chapter, Chapter 2 presents an overview of problems associated with student motivation and its relationship to academic achievement. Chapter 3 summarizes concepts of motivation, exploring what causes youngsters to want to achieve and how motives are affected by individual differences. Chapter 4 summarizes the research on learning conditions which can strengthen students' interest in academic achievement and their willingness to expend effort for it. The final chapter offers practical suggestions for classroom practices that will meet the needs of students and increase their motivation to learn and achieve. References are included. (JD)
