School of the Future Handbook. A Guide for Technology Implementation. F. M. Black Middle School.
Smith, Richard Alan; Sassi, Anthony
In 1985, Apple Computer, Inc., and the Houston Independent School District began a project to create a model School of the Future at the F. M. Black Middle School. As described in this guide, the project was designed to demonstrate how microcomputers and related technology can make the process of instruction more efficient and effective. The purpose of this document is to share what was learned from the School of the Future project with teachers and administrators from other school districts considering implementing similar projects. The information in the guide was compiled from more than 2 years of notes and experiences. The chapters represent some of the model steps for implementing technology-based instruction into a model school site. Individual chapters address the following: (1) planning the project; (2) selecting personnel; (3) training the staff; (4) orienting the staff; (5) providing equity; (6) involving the community; (7) preparing the building for technology; (8) automating the school office; (9) computing the school's schedule; (10) creating instructional materials; and (11) managing instruction. A concluding statement notes that research on the attitudes of the teachers, students, and parents indicated that the program had a positive effect on the school. (SD)
