Fundamental concepts that underlie mentoring in education are examined as well as many of the most frequently discussed issues concerning the actual implementation of mentor programs. Mentoring is a powerful tool to be utilized as a way to assist beginning administrators in surviving their first years in office. Ways to construct formal mentoring relationships are described. This manual is divided into five sections: (1) what mentoring is; (2) what is needed to begin a mentoring program; (3) how a mentoring program gets started; (4) a model for training mentors; and (5) some concluding thoughts.
