For the seventh consecutive year, the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills, Form U (CTBS/U) was used to measure achievement in South Carolina public schools in the following areas: (1) reading; (2) spelling; (3) language; (4) mathematics; (5) reference skills; (6) science; and (7) social studies. Results for grades 4, 5, 7, 9, and 11 are summarized in this report, which includes results for 220,589 students. The CTBS/U was developed in 1981. With respect to the 1981 norms, the achievement levels of the majority of all students in grades 4, 5, and 7 were above the national median in all seven areas. The majority of ninth-grade students scored above the national median in all areas except reading, and more than half the eleventh graders scored above the median in all areas except reading, reference skills, and science. While scores were generally fairly stable with respect to the preceding year, gains were reported for certain grades and skill areas. Overall, significant increases in all areas for all five grades since 1983 present evidence of the educational improvement in South Carolina. Appendices A through E contain 203 pages of test results by grade. Appendix F contains cautions in the interpretation of test results, and Appendix G is a glossary of terms related to the testing program. (SLD)
