Case Studies in Science Education and the Life Lab Science Program.
Arenson, Michael
The United States Department of Education's National Diffusion Network (NDN) has selected a number of science education programs to make available to schools across the country. The Life Lab Science Program (LLSP) is one such program. LLSP is a garden-based science and nutrition curriculum designed to raise students' level of science knowledge, and improve student attitudes toward the study of science and its applications to real-life problems through gardening. This study examined the nature of LLSP in school settings. Five elementary schools with LLSP experience were selected and described primarily from interviews from site visits. Discussions of the findings are categorized as follows: (1) Factors in a Successful Program; (2) Teacher Ability; (3) Students' Learning; (4) Transforming Science Education; and (5) Implementation. The strengths and weaknesses of LLSP are discussed. Interview questions used are appended. Twenty-nine references are listed. (YP)
