A Distance Learning Approach to Quality Mathematics Instruction in Nonpublic Elementary Schools.
Heller, Barbara R.
This is the narrative report of a project (begun in 1985) undertaken to promote quality mathematics instruction in the nonpublic, religion-oriented elementary schools in New York City. The major goals of the project for the 1988-89 year were to involve nonpublic schools (NPS) teacher representatives in the planning and creation of staff development videocassettes in mathematics, provide teachers with live workshops, and demonstrate that the training tapes have potential for surmounting the barriers to effective inservice teacher training. These project activities are described in three sections: planning and development activities, conduct of workshop series, and production of prototype tapes. The six workshops and participants' assessments of them are described. The workshop titles are: (1) "Calculators in the Classroom"; (2) "Integrating Math and Science"; (3) "Math Anxiety"; (4) "Decimals"; (5) "Mastering Fractions"; and (6) "Geometry." A summary evaluation report and workshop materials are appended. (CW)
