Techniques for Nurturing the Rudiments of Self-Reliance in Children from Birth to Age Three.
Lawhon, Tommie
Presented are selected techniques for nurturing the development of self-reliance in children from birth to 3 years. Literature focused on self-reliance, growth rates, encouragement of self-reliant growth, and the influences of parents and teachers is reviewed, and 22 nurturing techniques of caregivers, teachers, parents, and others are described. The recommended techniques for fostering the rudiments of self-reliance concern the areas of social and emotional growth, physical and cognitive development, creative experiences, and communication skills. Techniques are organized by age: birth to 18 months and 18 months to 36 months. It is concluded that a child needs encouragement in order to develop a basic feeling of self-reliance. Adults are responsible for creating an environment, both inside and outside the home, that encourages growth in self-reliant behavior on a continuous basis. (RH)
