A Report on Student Retention and Graduation in the University System of Georgia.
Szutz, Joseph J.; Pounds, Haskin R.
Based on fall quarter enrollments for 1983 through 1988, this report presents data on student retention in the postsecondary educational system of Georgia. The system includes 4 universities, 15 senior colleges, and 14 two-year colleges. First-year and 5-year retention rates and graduation rates are provided for first-time, full-time entering undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Highlights of the data are as follows: (1) the first-year retention rates of the universities were comparable to those of "highly selective" four-year public colleges throughout the country; (2) first-year retention rates at the senior colleges placed these colleges between the "traditional" and "selective" four-year public colleges; (3) the two-year colleges' first-year retention rates were comparable to other two-year colleges with "liberal" admissions policies; (4) Georgia's universities and senior colleges achieved five-year graduation rates far below those reported for comparative national reference categories; (5) the universities had the highest fall 1987 to fall 1988 retention rates (87.4%) followed by senior colleges (72.1%) and two-year colleges (66.3%); (6) systemwide, freshmen had higher first-year retention rates (81.3%) than developmental students (64.5%); (7) attrition declined progressively each year, with first-year attrition 30.8% systemwide, second year 10.1%, third year 4.8%, fourth year 2.7%, and fifth year 1.3%; and (8) the associate degree graduation rates for two-year college students entering in fall 1985 were 8.8% for developmental students, 27.3% for regularly admitted freshmen, 9.8% for black students, and 20.6% for students in all other racial categories. Appendixes provide detailed retention data by institution. (JMC)
