The Introduction of Computers in Schools: The Norwegian Experience. Examiners' Report.

This report on a 4-year (1984-87) project to introduce computers into the Norwegian schools begins with an overview of Norway's geography and climate, people, foreign policy, economy, recreation, and educational system. Background on the development of the national plan for the introduction of computers into the schools is then provided together with statements on aims, objectives, important tasks for central administration, and the establishment of a task force. The achievements, problems, and results of the project are summarized. Conclusions and recommendations by independent examiners, appointed by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) are discussed under nine broad headings: (1) the next phase of the project; (2) funding and time scale; (3) organizational issues; (4) curriculum; (5) software development initiatives; (6) teacher training initiatives; (7) dissemination of information; (8) equipment issues; and (9) research and evaluation directions. Two appendixes contain a list of participants in the meetings organized for the examiners' visit and the text of the revised background paper, "Computer Technology in Schools: The Norwegian Programme of Action."
