An Intensive Twelve Week Expository Writing Course for Below Average Seniors.

A study examined the effects of a comprehensive writing program for average and slightly below average high school students on student writing achievement and attitudes. The program aimed to provide remedial instruction to improve writing skills, since 89% of the school's upper middle class population matriculate in some sort of college degree program upon completion of high school. The program, which was taught over a twelve-week period in two Mass Media courses for 50 high school seniors, was divided into two segments: six weeks on paragraph development, with emphasis on organization, content, and mechanics; and six weeks on outlining and organizing two five-paragraph essays. All writing related to the course curriculum and mainly involved a multi-media approach. Pretests and posttests showed statistically significant differences from one test to the other.
