The Effects of Integrating Children's Literature into the Kindergarten Science Curriculum.
Norris, Lenora Kamer
A study examined the effects of using children's literature to introduce new science concepts to kindergarten children. Subjects, 48 kindergarten students, were arbitrarily assigned to either the control group or the experimental group. The experimental group was taught a unit on oceans using children's literature to introduce the science concepts. The control group was taught the same unit using only class discussion. Treatment sessions for both groups lasted three weeks. Comparison of pretests and posttests indicated that there was no significant difference in science achievement of students who were taught using children's literature and those who were not. (Two tables of data are included; 25 references, the testing instruments, the instructional unit, an appendix of data, and statistical formulas are attached.) (RS)
