Workplace Basics Conference. Summary of a Conference on the Employment and Training Needs of the 1990s (Columbus, Ohio, October 20, 1989).
Workplace Basics Conference Planning Committee, Columbus, OH.
This report summarizes the proceedings of a 1-day conference on employment and training needs of the 1990s. Information summarized includes background and purpose, design and methodology, keynote speaker and presentation, synthesis of small group work, and implications and future community actions. The keynote speaker, Anthony Carnevale noted that the competitive position of the United States in the global marketplace is heavily dependent on technological competence, organizational strength, and the quality of the work force; but at present the educational system is not producing the workers needed and is not accepting responsibility for preparing students for the world of work. Business and education leaders are urged to act together to find solutions to the growing shortage of qualified entry-level workers. Summaries of eight small group sessions show how each group defined the problem of producing workers with workplace skills, identified causes, and suggested problem/cause relationships. The document includes a summary of the research project that inspired the conference, a workplace skills inventory, and directory of conference participants. (KC)
