Psychological Characteristics, Teaching Beliefs and Teaching Behaviors of Artist/Teachers.
Clarke, Janet Richards; Gipe, Joan P.
Artist/teachers are professional artists in various fields who teach in high schools for the visual and performing arts. Although many hold advanced degrees, few have taken courses in teaching methods. Nevertheless, as a group artist/teachers have a reputation for teaching excellence. Participants in this study of the psychological characteristics of artist/teachers were 202 teachers who responded to questionnaires regarding their personality characteristics and their teaching beliefs and practices. A profile of the artist/teachers in this sample them to be creative, confident about their abilities as teachers, highly intuitive, judgmental, evenly introverted and extroverted, and somewhat less internally directed than expected. With the exception of the last item, these would seem to be the ideal characteristics for teachers of artistically talented students. (JD)
