The Early Childhood Career Opportunities (ECCO) Program is a 21-week program of intensive training that provides limited-English-proficient Hispanic, Indian, and Pakistani adult students with the required skills for entry-level positions in the child care field. Courses in early childhood focus on child growth and development, introduction to early childhood education, health and nutrition for the young child, play and creative expression, preschool techniques, and infant/toddler techniques. English-as-a-second-language courses for non-native speakers focus on reading and study skills, advanced reading and study skills, and grammar and composition. The ECCO program is located at the Oakton East Campus of Oakton Community College in Skokie, Illinois. Students successfully completing the course of studies are awarded Oakton's 18-hour certificate in Early Childhood Development. This report includes a training schedule, demographic data on ECCO students, and program objectives and activities.
