Inservice Training for Community College Faculty in Learning Disabilities Using Video Vignettes.
Perin, Dolores
An in-service teacher training project was undertaken by the Center for Advanced Study in Education to produce video materials illustrating instructional strategies for learning disabled students and to conduct four on-campus workshops at four City University of New York (CUNY) and State University of New York (SUNY) community colleges in the New York metropolitan area. From 1987 to 1989, eight sets of videotaped vignettes, "Tutoring in Writing Skills,""A Writing Conference,""Using a Computer to Teach Writing Skills,""Lecture Strategies,""Previewing and Outlining a Textbook Chapter,""Tutoring in Reading Skills,""Teaching Mathematics," and "Tutoring in Math Skills," were produced, based on actual instructional sessions at CUNY campuses. In addition, a comprehensive viewing guide containing general information on learning disabilities, background on the students seen in the videos, instructions for tape use, commentary on the strategies shown, and a list of resources was produced. The inservice training workshops included structured introductions, an orientation to learning disabilities in college students, a presentation of composite case material in developmental sequence, a presentation of the video vignettes, and a discussion based on questions from the viewing guide. At the end of each workshop, participants were asked to complete evaluation forms on an anonymous basis. The workshops received overall ratings of "good" to "excellent" on 94% to 100% of the evaluations, with 75% to 100% of the participants indicating that the workshops had increased their understanding of issues concerning learning disabled students and 92% to 100% indicating that they would share information gained in the workshops with their colleagues. Appendixes include workshop agendas, a report on the inservice workshops, summaries of workshop evaluations, and evaluation forms. (WJT)
