Development of a Questionnaire for a Study of Employers' Usage of Typewriters and Computer Hardware/Software in a California Community College District. Curriculum and Program Planning.
Clough, Carol E.; Nawy, Martha
In 1988, a project was undertaken at Chabot College in California to develop a questionnaire and study methodology for assessing the views of employers regarding the business applications of typewriters and computers. Staff at the college needed this information for curriculum and program planning, as well as for equipment and supply budgeting. The project involved: (1) a review of the literature on the need for research on technological changes in the office, questionnaire development and design, and the involvement of staff in research and curriculum design; (2) the formation of a committee made up of the 23 full-time office and business computer education faculty and an administrator; (3) a committee meeting to determine research objectives and a time frame and process for questionnaire development; (4) the solicitation of questions to be incorporated into the survey instrument from committee members; (5) meetings to review, analyze, and evaluate the proposed questions; (6) the preparation of five drafts of the questionnaire; (7) the pilot testing of the final version among 10 different-sized employers; and (8) the development of recommendations concerning study methodology. An extensive literature review, a 99-item bibliography, a curriculum checklist, and various drafts of the survey instrument are included in the project report. (JMC)
