Information on Japan's educational system and the academic placement of students in educational institutions in the United States is presented. After an introduction providing an overview of Japan and its educational system, five sections cover the following areas: current organization and status of education (general information and information on kindergarten through the university and on university entrance examinations); university education (accreditation, university organization, graduate education, and dental and medical education); other tertiary-level education (technical colleges, junior colleges, the University of the Air, special training schools, miscellaneous schools, selected programs of study, and institutions approved by other ministries and agencies); international education activity (Japanese students abroad, U.S. students in Japan, international linkages, Japanese institutions abroad, U.S. institutions in Japan, and international schools); and admissions-related issues, grading systems, and academic credentials. Eight appendices provide information on: technical colleges; junior colleges; universities; junior college correspondence programs; university correspondence programs; sample academic credentials; government and educational organizations; and international schools.
