Fund Raising Outcomes and Effectiveness in Private and Public Institutions. ASHE Annual Meeting Paper.
Duronio, Margaret A.; Loessin, Bruce A.
An analysis of fund raising outcome for private and public institutions is presented for the 5-year period between 1983/84 and 1987/88. The results of research involving intensive case studies of fund raising practices and policies in 10 dissimilar institutions with successful fund raising programs are offered. Fund raising outcomes for the above-mentioned years are discussed according to: overall support, donor groups, and types of institutions. It is noted that fierce competition will continue to increase for available philanthropic dollars, and public institutions are taking an increasingly larger portion of those funds. Research on fund raising effectiveness shows the following: private institutions in general are more likely to be outstanding in characteristics of successful fund raising; clarity of institutional image and presidential leadership are the two elements found most often to be outstanding in successful fund raising programs; and fund raising success does not require that an institution be outstanding in all or even a majority of the elements. An appendix provides 10 case-by-case analyses. Tables are included. Contains 8 references. (SM)
